Wild ARC needs your help

Since 2002, when Wild ARC began the process of becoming its own branch of the BC SPCA, we have been operating with the goal of becoming a self-sustaining facility. Currently, the BC SPCA Provincial Office subsidizes our annual expenses of $300,000. We are pleased to announce that we have increased our revenues from $18,000 in 2003 to $180,000 in 2006 through new fundraising initiatives and raising our profile in the community.

But there is still more work to be done. One large expense for our branch is the yearly maintenance work that must be performed on our specialty cages. In addition, due to our wet climate and recent storms, many of our cages require repairs and improvements in order to safely house our wild patients. Our raccoon and aquatics pens need to be entirely rebuilt. We have no municipal water line on our rural road and must truck water in every second day in the summer. This is yet another future project that demands our attention and resources.

This is why we have chosen to kick off our tenth anniversary in 2007 with a new campaign to raise funds to improve our current facilities. We would like to offer you a very special invitation to be a part of our new sponsorship program, where you can personally sponsor one of our special wildlife rehabilitation cages. Sponsors will not only have their name displayed on the cage, but they will also receive a certificate or plaque to display at home or the office, have their name listed on Wild ARC's website (if desired), and will be given first priority for reservations to our annual spring Open House.

By participating in our sponsorship program, you too can enjoy the knowledge that you are directly contributing to the rehabilitation and eventual release of wild animals.

Raptor Flight Pen

History

The raptor flight pen was built over the winter 2005-2006, and was the first new enclosure to be built on the property since 1997. Building supplies cost $20,000, but the structure was built by 100% volunteer labour.

Purpose

Allows us to exercise and care for large birds and raptors (owls, eagles, hawks) up to the point of release. In the past, once these animals were healed from their injuries, we had to transfer them to other centers over three hours away.

Maintenance Needs

Privacy fence, perching structures and materials, flight obstacles, electrical and water hook-up, planting of shrubs and greenery in pen, ongoing ground surface maintenance.

Cost of Annual Sponsorship

$5,000

Raccoon Habitat and Quarantine

History

As Wild ARC treated over 50 raccoons in 2006, our 10 year old pen has become too small to handle our current intake. In addition, because the pen was built with wood, it is impossible to properly sterilize the structure. We also require a quarantine area to isolate at risk raccoons from the rest of the group. Making things even more challenging is the need for a complicated septic and plumbing system that separates laundry and drainage water from the other water systems on the property.

Purpose

This structure will provide a den and playpen for the over 30 baby raccoons that we treat every year. These babies must learn how to fish and climb so that they can be re-released into the wild.

Maintenance Needs

Water, electrical, and septic maintenance, annual sterilization using fire, as well as new toys and habitat features that must be changed annually to prevent disease.

Deer Pens

History

These pens provide temporary homes for the orphaned deer fawns that come into our care every year. Our local Home Depot generously built the enclosure fences in 2004 and 2006.

Purpose

The deer shed houses the baby deer, and the pens themselves offer a relatively large area for our deer to grow up and exercise in. A corral is needed to safely round up the deer at the end of the season, when it is time to contain, transport, and release them back to the wild.

Maintenance Needs

The deer shed is in need of serious renovations and improvements, and the corral and a second shed need to be built. Annual maintenance needs include electrical work, repairs to damages caused by recent winter storms, planting of shrubs and trees, and installation of bottle and hay racks.

Cost of Annual Sponsorship

$1,500 each. Two pens available for sponsorship.

Avian Pens

History

This is the original building for housing the birds that are treated at Wild ARC. This structure’s roof sustained heavy damage in 2005 and needs permanent repair.

Purpose

Used primarily for songbirds and forestbirds, however, all birds including owls and herons do spend some time in these cages before release or being moved to a larger pen.

Maintenance Needs

Requires a new roof to be built. Annual needs include power washing and deep cleaning, water and electrical upgrades, replacement of gravel, new screening, nest boxes, and perching materials.

Cost of Annual Sponsorship

$500 per cage. Six cages available for sponsorship.

Aquatic Pens

History

These pens have been the most challenging for upkeep, as the pipes easily clog, and in freezing temperatures, crack. The roof blew off several years ago, and a temporary structure was put on in 2005. A future capital project will be replacement of the existing structure, however we need to make immediate repairs as these pens house all of our waterfowl.

Purpose

All ducks, geese, swans and gulls are housed here. Water mammals such as beaver, mink, and otter are also housed in these pens for conditioning before release into the wild.

Maintenance Needs

Structure requires a permanent roof. Annual needs will include power washing and deep cleaning, as well as water and electrical upgrades, new screening, perching surfaces, aquatic sterilization supplies, and pump servicing.

Cost of Annual Sponsorship

$2,000 per side, $4,000 for the entire structure.

Screen Pens

Purpose

These smaller, more isolated cages are often used for swallows and hummingbirds before they are ready to be released. They can also be used to house animals that require an outdoor pen, but must be confined. This could be an animal that has not adapted well to being housed indoors, but also must be prevented from re-injuring itself.

Maintenance Needs

Annual needs include replacement of gravel, new screening, new nest boxes, and perching materials.

Cost of Annual Sponsorship

$375 per pen. Two pens available for sponsorship.

Mammal Pens

History

This was the original building that was constructed to house a variety of small mammals, as well as birds when our facilities are at capacity. The roof blew off in 2005, and a temporary one was put in place.

Purpose

Houses all of our small mammals, including squirrels, otters, beaver, mink, and cottontail rabbits. In 2006 we treated 500 mammals, making this a very busy and much needed building!

Maintenance Needs

The building requires a permanent roof. Inside, the panels between cages need to be replaced as they have sustained heavy damage from animals trying to escape. Annual needs include power washing and deep cleaning, water and electrical upgrading, replacement of gravel, new screening, and nest boxes.

Cost of Annual Sponsorship

$750 per cage. Three cages available for sponsorship.

Gardens

Purpose

Wild ARC would like to increase our ability to feed our patients from our own gardens by growing herbs and vegetables. We also need to prevent local wildlife visitors from a free buffet and thus prevent access to the gardens with a fence.

Maintenance Needs

Fencing, soil, plants and seeds.

Cost of Annual Sponsorship
