Wild ARC relies on the assistance of many volunteers throughout the year, with the majority of animal care activity between April - October. Wild ARC offers workshops to train Animal Care Volunteers from February - April, and a waiting list is used during the rest of the year. Education, Outreach, Maintenance, and Fundraising Volunteer opportunities are available throughout the year. Please review the job descriptions for each of the volunteer opportunities available and consider the commitment and training required before submitting an application. Animal Care Volunteer recruitment and training is now commencing for the 2008 Animal Care Season. Animal Care Volunteer
Responsibilities
- Assisting staff with care and maintenance of wildlife patients
- Preparing diets and giving feedings
- Cleaning cages and aviaries
- Laundry, dishes and general cleaning duties
- Setting up habitats for indoor and outdoor animals
- Being an ambassador for wildlife in your community!
Requirements
- Minimum age of 19 (high school students age 16 - 18 in work experience programs may also apply through their schools, contact your career counsellor)
- Proof of current tetanus vaccination
- Good communication and interpersonal skills
- Ability to work independently and as a team member
- Good physical stamina and health
- Comfortable around birds and mammals
- Reliable transportation as Wild ARC is not on a transit route
Training and commitment
In addition to initial orientation, Animal Care Volunteers must complete four hours of training (covering wildlife diseases, baby bird and mammal care) before beginning a regular weekly shift. Animal Care Volunteers are required to commit to a minimum of one 4 hour shift once a week for 6 months, although many volunteers will stay throughout the year.
Spit 'n Polish Volunteer
Responsibilities
- Laundry, Dishes, Cage cleaning, and general cleaning duties
- Food and supplies inventory and organization
Requirements
- Minimum age of 19 (high school students age 16 - 18 in work experience programs may also apply through their schools, contact your career counsellor)
- Proof of current tetanus vaccination
- Good communication and interpersonal skills
- Ability to work independently and take initiative
- Good physical stamina and health
- Reliability and commitment
Training and commitment
Basic volunteer orientation and Animal Health training. Required to commit to aminimum weekly 2 hour shift for four months.
Education Volunteer
Responsibilities
- Contribute to the development and delivery of education programs to school and community groups
Requirements
- Demonstrated teaching experience or interest
- Experience working with children and youth
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- Independent research ability and computer skills
- Oral presentation and public speaking experience
- Reliability and commitment
- Criminal Record Check
Training and commitment
Education Volunteers must complete an initial orientation and are encouraged to all attend all animal care training. They will report to the Volunteer Humane Education Committee. The commitment is flexible but requires a minimum of 4 hours per month.
Outreach Volunteer Responsibilities
- Educate the public about Wild ARC through community events and fundraisers

Outreach Volunteers must complete an initial orientation and are encouraged to all attend all animal care training sessions. The commitment is flexible but requires a minimum of 4 hours per month.
Facility Maintenance Volunteer
Responsibilities
- Work with staff to design and maintain cages and pens for wildlife patients
Requirements
- Minimum 19 years of age (students age 16-18 may volunteer through work experiences programs)
- Proof of current tetanus shot; Good physical stamina and health
- Handy with tools
- Good communication and interpersonal skills
- Reliability and commitment
Training and commitment
Facility Maintenance Volunteers must complete an initial orientation and Animal Health Training. The commitment is flexible but requires a minimum of 6 hours per month.
Work Party and Project Volunteer
Responsibilities
- Contribute to the growth and maintenance of the facility through group work parties or individual projects (such as data entry or gardening)
Requirements
- With the minimum age limit a bit more flexible, teach your older kids the importance of volunteering for your community AND help wild animals at the same time!
- Proof of current tetanus shot; Good physical stamina and health
- Good communication and interpersonal skills
- Reliability and commitment

Work Party and Project Volunteers must complete an initial orientation. The commitment is flexible but requires a minimum of 4 hours per month.
